Edging materials
Why we must use edging materials? Because we can have a nice decorative touch, and provide a clean line around our garden. On the other hand, edgings help keep soil and mulch in and grass out of well attended gardens.
What about edging materials? There are many choices. What you will choose , it depends on the appearance you are trying to achieve and the amount of money and time you are willing to spend on preparation and materials.
So lets see our choices:
Cement, Brick, Stone, Metal , Plastic, timbers, railroad ties.
Lets add a few words about them before we see each method separately:
The edgings made from stone, brick or cement make a nice and durable statement in the garden and they will last for a long time. Add labor costs to this choice for making a good job, because if the job is not well done spreading turf grasses will quickly find their way into nooks and crannies.
You may have an area where you want to try readymade cement borders. They come in a number of different styles, shapes and colors. Also on the market you can find interlocking pavers. These pavers don't require mortar to achieve a tight fit. They are available in different colors. You may use them to create everything from simple borders to raised beds and even garden walls.
The Metal edging is the choice of professionals, and although expensive, it lasts nearly forever and is easy to work with. Painted or unpainted sections are usually available in eight and sixteen foot length. We can join them together with bolts or clips. We suggest to go with painted metal to help prolong the onset of rust. Alternatively cover them with anti corrosive paint of your choice.
The Plastic edging, although is lacking aesthetics, is reasonably priced, can last for decades (centuries) and is simple to apply. Have in mind that in warmer climates is easier to install.
Railroad ties and Landscape timbers are also popular, durable and relatively inexpensive, because we can find them used by the kilo or in the near forest. We can be use them individually to outline beds or we can stack them one on top of the another and secured them with long bolts or nails. Both of them are extremely heavy road ties are extremely heavy, so get some help to move them. Remember to use old ties because they have cheaper price than the new ones. Although ties and timbers make a nice job of defining straight borders, we can't handle any curves.
